by JKR and Matt Casamassina
May 11, 2006 - At Nintendo's pre-E3 press conference, executive vice president of sales and marketing, Reggie Fils-Aime, told the audience that Wii 27 titles would be available to play on the E3 floor this week. The following is a breakdown of the games actually on display.
1- Super Mario Galaxy (temporary name)
2- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
3- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
4- Red Steel
5- Excite Truck
6- Sonic: Wild Fire
7- Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz
8- Project H.A.M.M.E.R.
9- Demo: Shooting
10- Demo: Obstacle
11- Demo: Table Tennis
12- WarioWare: Smooth Moves
13- Final Furlong
14- Madden NFL 07
15- Tony Hawk´s Downhill Jam
16- SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab
17- Elebits
18- One Piece Ultimate Adventure
19- Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2
20- Wii Sports: Tennis
21- Wii Sports: Golf
22- Wii Sports: Baseball
23- Wii Sports: Airplane
24- Necro-Nesia
25- Bomberman Land
26- Wii Music: Orchestra
27- SD Gundam
An impressive variety of titles, to be sure, however we wonder how the three demos can really count as playable games. Nevertheless, Nintendo came through on its promise to supply an assortment of different genres and game types for many different audiences.
In addition to these playable titles, dozens of other Wii games were announced, but were either only shown in video form or in screenshots on the show floor, or were absent completely. These other titles include everything from the Monolith Soft-developed Disaster: Day of Crisis to the only-on-video Trauma Center: A Second Opinion. Other non-playable Wii entries include Harvest Moon, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers, Dragon Quest Swords, Pangya Golf, and Metal Slug Anthology.
More coverage of these games and more will be featured on IGN as E3 2006 continues.
Nintendo Talks Wii Nintendogs
Could a console-based sequel to the Big N's popular handheld series be on the way?
May 11, 2006 - One of the first titles to fully demonstrate the functionality of Nintendo DS was the unlikely hit Nintendogs, a game that let players care for and train their very own virutal puppy. The title used the stylus with great results and so many felt that the franchise would also perfectly suit the Wii's console, whose innovative remote is in many ways similar to the stylus.
We chatted with Nintendo EAD's general manager, Takahashi Tezuka, about a possible Wii sequel to Nintendogs and although he was careful with his words, he suggested that the Big N has already thought of the idea. Here's an excerpt from our interview:
IGN Wii: Will you bring Nintendogs to Wii?
Tezuka: It's definitely a property that we're looking at because it was so well received and it did so well for us. There are definitely conversations about where we can take it next. Nothing specific yet, but it's definitely something that's in our minds.
More as it develops.
Hudson Declares 100 Games for Wii
Nintendo's Virtual Console gets a ton of support from its original third party.
May 11, 2006 - While speaking with Hudson Soft today, IGN learned that the company will bring upwards of 100 titles to Nintendo's Virtual Console. As developer of such classics as Lode Runner, Bomberman, and Bonk, this news is huge for fans of games long past. But that's not all, the news gets even bigger.
Hudson Soft is currently attempting to acquire rights to other third party games to release on the Virtual Console, the company revealed to IGN on Thursday. Developers who no longer exist as actual companies could still see their games make the way to Nintendo's system for downloading. According to one Hudson Soft representative, they "have every single one of [their] lawyers checking into it."
Currently, Bonk's Adventure from the Turbografx is the only actual title announced from the company, and is available to play at Nintendo's E3 booth. Hudson seems to be looking for feedback from gamers on what titles they'd like to see though. IGN was quick to suggest Adventure Island, the classic released on the NES. A knowing smile and "that is important for us to know, thank you," was our reply (so if Adventure Island shows up on the VC, you may thank us personally).
We're very excited reviewing the long, long list of amazing games that Hudson has crafted over the years. Around one hundred titles from them, and perhaps even more, is enough to make the virtual console the place to be when Wii launches this year.
Pangya Golf is a No-Show
Tecmo's latest arcade golf game not playable on the showroom floor.
May 11, 2006 - Super Swing Golf Pangya, one of the first Wii games shown in motion at Nintendo's media briefing on Tuesday, will not be available for play on the showroom floor this week. While we'd love to give the game some hands-on coverage, Tecmo's new take on the world of golf will have to wait for a later day. Aside from the conference footage, we know very little about the game as it stands right now. Basic details have been provided, but they are sparse for the time being.
Pangya Golf is being developed from the ground up, focusing on the unique feel of the Wii controller. While the PC version offered multiplayer matches, Wii's rendition will instead focus on the single-player campaign only, allowing players to pick their favorite golfer and play through a character-specific story line. Much like other arcade golf games such as Hot Shots, Pangya Golf will focus on distinct character designs which encourage customization as you progress through the story. As the story mode continues, multiple costumes and accessories will be available for each golfer.
In the meantime, be sure to check out our gameplay videos and screens from the latest build, found in our media section below.
We'll have more on Pangya Golf as news break. Keep checking back at IGN Wii for more E3 coverage.
E3 2006: Fire Emblem Sequel
Officially announced for Wii. What can you expect?
May 11, 2006 - Along with a few of the other heavy-hitting franchises at Nintendo's conference on Tuesday, a brief FMV sequence of a new Wii-exclusive Fire Emblem game made a brief appearance. The clip, which lasted only seconds, set the mood for the next adventure, as fans witnessed brief cuts of an action sequence showcasing smooth visuals and a beautiful art style.
Though there is no other mention of this game from Nintendo, the characters in the teaser seem to be an entirely new cast. A fighter can be shown fending off guards while a female mage builds up a spell. Aside from the brief taste of design, the video leaves us with far more questions than answers.
