Epic Games Gearing Up For Gears Of War: Exile?



It appears Microsoft and Epic Games have three Gears of War projects in the pipeline.

There’s the Gears of War Triple Pack a budget bundle of Gears of War 1, 2, the "Road to Ruin" campaign, and bonus multiplayer maps coming to Xbox 360 on February 15.

Gears of War 3, which is slated for release on Xbox 360 this fall.

And apparently Gears of War: Exile. Epic Games filed a trademark for Gears of War: Exile plus registered the logo pictured above. Perhaps, this is the Gears of War announcement that was supposed to be at Spike TV’s VGA award show?

Possible Story Connection Revealed

Rumour has it that Epic Games are currently working on an as-yet-unannounced Gears of War title going by the name of Gears of War: Exile. All that has been seen of the title so far is that of an assortment of trademark applications and a low quality logo, but today Electronic Theatre received new information on how the title could connect to the main bloodline of the series.

Marcus Fenix is not just the poster boy for Gears of War, but also the patriarch of the series’ story. Though many would argue that Gears of War could continue without Fenix at the helm, to the casual observer Dominic Santiago and the rest of Electronic Theatre ImageDelta Squad are simply bit parts in the story of machismo heroics from the headstrong convict. And of course, it’s currently expected that Gears of War: Exile will continue such tradition, once again placing Fenix at the centre of the story.

A source close to the project has revealed to Electronic Theatre today that Gears of War: Exile could well be a prequel title, revealing the story of Marcus Fenix and how he came to be incarcerated at the beginning of the first Gears of War. While stating that there was no participation in the development of the project on their behalf, the source suggested that such a premise had been discussed with colleagues “directly involved” with the Gears of War franchise.

No further details were offered, on either the storyline or that of the rumours concerning the use of the Xbox 360’s full-body motion-controller Kinect in the game. In fact, there was no suggestion of which format(s) the project was currently in development for at all. Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with any future details on Gears of War: Exile.

‘Gears of War: Exile’ Cancelled

Gears of War: Exile, possibly the rumored Gears of War Kinect title, has been cancelled. Cliff Bleszinski, the Epic Games design director, says that the rumored Kinect title is no longer in development.

“Let’s just bury the hatchet now,” Bleszinski said. “Gears of War: Exile was an unannounced game that I can’t give any details about that has since been cancelled.”

Trademarks for the game were spotted in January 2011, and Xbox 360 World Magazine said the title was to be officially unveiled at the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo. Other than that, not much was known about the project.
